How to Buy from Kyobo Book Centre (교보문고) and Hottracks from Overseas (2026 Guide)

By HaulKorea · Last checked 2026-10-05

Yes, Kyobo Book Centre ships books overseas itself, through FedEx. The catch is the pricing: Kyobo charges international shipping by the number of books, not by weight, and the rate went up by ₩5,000 per book on October 1, 2026. One book to the US now costs ₩24,200 to ship. Stationery and albums from Hottracks, Kyobo's lifestyle brand, are a harder case. This guide explains how Kyobo's own overseas delivery works, what it costs in won, where it falls short, and when package forwarding or a purchasing agent is the better route.

What Kyobo is and why it is worth the trouble

Kyobo Book Centre is the bookstore most Koreans picture when they think of a bookstore. It dates to 1980, and its flagship in Gwanghwamun, central Seoul, is a destination in its own right. It is the country's largest offline chain and one of the three major online booksellers.

Because of that scale, Kyobo is strong where smaller sellers are thin: academic and professional titles, imported foreign-language books, and textbooks. If a Korean university press published it, Kyobo probably lists it.

The second half of the business is Hottracks (핫트랙스). Anyone who has visited a Kyobo store knows the section: pens, notebooks, planners, desk accessories, character goods, albums. Hottracks used to be a separate company and now sits inside Kyobo's site. Korean stationery has a following abroad, and Hottracks is where much of it is sold in one place.

A third reason is exclusives. Kyobo sometimes sells special cover editions of books and its own preorder benefits for albums. These are available only through Kyobo.

Can you buy from Kyobo directly from overseas?

For books, yes. Here is what Kyobo's own notices say.

Carrier and pricing. Kyobo's overseas delivery runs through FedEx. Its shipping notice states that overseas shipping is calculated separately from domestic shipping and charged according to the number of books ordered. Free shipping does not apply.

Kyobo published the full table in a notice dated September 9, 2026. These are the rates for orders from October 1, 2026:

Books US Europe Australia Japan Asia 1
1 ₩24,200 ₩27,700 ₩24,300 ₩21,200 ₩21,700
2 ₩40,700 ₩46,200 ₩40,800 ₩35,700 ₩36,200
3 ₩64,700 ₩77,200 ₩57,800 ₩51,200 ₩52,200
5 ₩90,700 ₩110,700 ₩82,300 ₩73,700 ₩75,700
10 ₩172,700 ₩190,200 ₩141,800 ₩127,700 ₩131,700

The notice also lists Northern Europe, South America, Africa, a second Asia zone and Cambodia. Which countries fall in each zone is shown at checkout.

The weight rule. The cart page explains that if a single book weighs more than 2 kg, each extra 2 kg counts as one more book for pricing. Sets and series are charged per volume. Books with separately packed CDs or supplements can be charged per piece.

The fee is an estimate. Kyobo says the shipping charge shown at order time is an estimate, and that an additional amount may be requested if the actual weight is higher.

Duties are yours. Kyobo warns that even after you pay shipping, the destination country may charge customs duty, VAT and other fees such as storage or a duty-advancement fee.

Rates have risen twice. In May 2022 Kyobo raised the rate by ₩3,000 per book on every route. From October 1, 2026 it rose again by ₩5,000 per book: one book to the US went from ₩19,200 to ₩24,200, and ten books from ₩122,700 to ₩172,700. Kyobo attributed the change to FedEx adjusting its rates.

EU buyers. In a July 2026 notice, Kyobo told customers that from July 1, 2026 parcels to EU countries worth €150 or less are no longer duty-free and may be charged €3 per declared item type, payable by the recipient.

Signup and payment. Kyobo's signup page offers five routes: Kakao, Naver, Google, mobile phone or email. We did not go past that screen, so we cannot say whether email signup later asks for Korean identity verification. On payment, the help center has several entries about overseas-issued cards and 3D authentication, which tells us the option exists. We could not read which card brands are accepted.

What is still unclear. Hottracks items such as stationery, goods and albums are widely reported as excluded from overseas delivery. We could not read Kyobo's own answer on which products and countries are covered.

Three ways to buy from Kyobo

1. Direct (Kyobo + FedEx) 2. You buy, we ship (package forwarding) 3. We buy for you (HaulKorea)
Who orders You You, to a Korean address HaulKorea
Kyobo account and working card Required Required Not required
How international shipping is priced By number of books By weight and size By weight and size
Final price known at checkout No, estimate; may be topped up Usually after the parcel is weighed Yes, one payment; overage refunded

Combine with other stores No Yes Yes
Import duty to the US Billed to you by FedEx Depends on the forwarder Included in the price

Go direct if you want one or two heavy, expensive books. Per-book pricing favors a single thick hardcover.

Think twice about direct if you want many thin books. Ten slim paperbacks to the US cost ₩172,700 in shipping under Kyobo's table, even though they weigh little. Weight-based routes do better here. One New Zealand blogger made the same point after paying ₩41,000 in shipping on three Kyobo books worth ₩39,000.

Use forwarding if your account and card work and you want Hottracks items or a mixed box.

Use a purchasing agent if signup or payment fails, or you want the total fixed up front. See purchasing agent vs package forwarding for the general comparison.

How to order from Kyobo with HaulKorea, step by step

  1. Find the item on kyobobook.co.kr. Hottracks products are on the same site under their own tab.
  2. Copy the product address from your browser. 3.4. Select options and your country. For stationery, give color and size. For planners, give the year and whether you want dated or undated.
  3. Check the total. Item price, Kyobo's domestic shipping and international shipping appear as one figure.
  4. Pay once with PayPal. Unlike an estimate that can be topped up later, this is the only payment. If the actual weight is lower, you get the shipping difference back.
  5. Review inspection photos taken at our Korean warehouse.
  6. Track the parcel. Delivery time:.

What it costs on Kyobo's side

Domestic shipping. Under the policy in force since February 20, 2023, book orders pay ₩2,500 and ship free from ₩15,000. For Hottracks albums and DVDs the free-shipping threshold is ₩20,000. Stationery sold by outside vendors and used-marketplace items follow each seller's terms. One vendor-shipped highlighter set we checked carried a ₩3,000 fee, free from ₩50,000 from that vendor. These figures matter when an agent or forwarder receives the order inside Korea.

Real prices, checked October 5, 2026. On Kyobo's weekly bestseller list, a new hardcover novel was ₩16,650 (list ₩18,500), a long-selling Korean novel ₩11,700, and an economics title ₩24,750. At Hottracks, a six-color highlighter set was ₩7,920, a fountain pen on promotion ₩8,900, a 2027 diary ₩17,600, and a K-pop mini album on preorder ₩20,500.

Book prices. Korea's fixed book price rule, 도서정가제 (doseo jeonggaje), caps new-book discounts at 10% plus 5% in points, 15% in total. It is set by Article 22 of the Publishing Industry Promotion Act and applies to online and offline stores alike. Kyobo's price for a new book will be close to any other store's.

Kyobo's strength is academic and professional books, which are the expensive categories:

Category Average list price of 2025 new titles
Technology and applied science ₩27,346
Social science ₩25,732
Natural science ₩24,796
History ₩24,382
Philosophy ₩21,981
Literature ₩15,784
All categories ₩19,897

What to buy at Kyobo and Hottracks

  • University and professional textbooks. Technology and social science titles average ₩25,000 to ₩27,000 list. Hard to source elsewhere abroad.
  • Korean history and humanities. History averages around ₩24,400.
  • Kyobo-exclusive cover editions. Limited runs of popular novels with alternate covers.
  • Korean language and exam prep books. A deep selection, including TOPIK materials.
  • Planners and diaries. A seasonal rush every autumn for the next year's editions.
  • Pens, notebooks and desk goods from Korean brands. Light and small, so cheap to ship by weight.
  • Character stationery and stickers. Popular gift items.
  • Albums with Hottracks preorder benefits. Tied to the preorder period.

Most everyday stationery sits under ₩20,000, and a standard CD album was about ₩20,500 when we checked. We could not find a statement on Hottracks about chart reporting for albums, so do not assume it.

Things that go wrong, and how to avoid them

Per-book shipping surprises. A boxed set is charged per volume on Kyobo's own overseas delivery. A five-volume set is five books, which is ₩90,700 to the US. Check the cart before paying, or use a weight-based route.

Top-up requests. Kyobo's displayed overseas fee is an estimate. Heavy art books and dictionaries are the usual cause of extra charges.

An unexpected FedEx bill. In April 2026, buyers on a Korean-American forum reported receiving FedEx notices for customs duty and a disbursement fee after their Kyobo book orders were delivered. One was also charged storage for a two-day hold, and they said Kyobo told them it could not help with local FedEx matters. US rules have changed since then, but the pattern is worth knowing: an express carrier that pays duty for you charges a fee for doing so. One logistics provider lists FedEx's US disbursement fee at a minimum of $17.50 from July 20, 2026.

Seasonal sellouts. Next-year planners and limited covers go quickly from October to December. Have a second choice.

Items that cannot fly. Stationery looks harmless, but some of it is restricted in air freight: correction fluid, spray adhesive, some inks, lighters sold as gifts, and anything with a lithium battery. Vendor-shipped goods arrive separately. Hottracks items from outside vendors ship from the vendor, on the vendor's schedule. A mixed order may reach the warehouse in several parcels over several days.

Fragile items. Glass pen sets, ceramic goods and LPs need careful packing. Look at the inspection photos.

Returns, damage and customs

Kyobo's shipping policy sets the customer-paid return fee at ₩2,500 for a change of mind. We could not confirm the return deadline from an official page, so check the product page.

When an agent buys for you, a return is realistic only while the item is still in Korea. Inspection photos are your chance to catch a wrong color or a bent cover. Once the box has left, return postage usually outweighs the item's value. Customs. Import rules vary by country, and outside the US the recipient pays whatever is due. For the US, the $800 duty-free allowance ended on August 29, 2025. Since July 24, 2026, most Korean-made goods face a combined rate of 12.5% where their normal duty is lower, according to law-firm summaries of the USTR notice. Those summaries list informational materials as exempt, a category that has historically covered books and recorded music. Stationery is ordinary merchandise and is not exempt. Much stationery sold in Korea is also made in China, and duty follows where a product was made, not where it was bought. HaulKorea's US shipments include duty in the price. Our US import duty guide works through the numbers.

FAQ

Does Kyobo Book Centre ship internationally? Yes, books ship overseas by FedEx. The fee is set by the number of books and the destination, and free shipping does not apply.

How much is Kyobo's overseas shipping? From October 1, 2026, one book costs ₩24,200 to the US, ₩27,700 to Europe and ₩21,200 to Japan. Two books to the US cost ₩40,700 and ten cost ₩172,700. The rate rose by ₩5,000 per book on that date.

Does Hottracks ship overseas? Stationery, goods and albums are commonly reported as excluded from Kyobo's overseas delivery. We could not confirm Kyobo's official list. Forwarding or a purchasing agent covers these items.

Can I sign up for Kyobo without a Korean phone number? The signup page offers Kakao, Naver, Google, mobile phone or email. We could not confirm whether the email route later requires Korean identity verification.

Is Kyobo cheaper than YES24 or Aladin? For new books, no store can be meaningfully cheaper. The fixed book price law caps discounts at 15% including points. Differences come from shipping and exclusive editions.

Will I be charged duty on books sent to the US? Books carry no regular US duty, and the 2026 tariff measure reportedly exempts informational materials. Even so, some buyers were billed by FedEx in April 2026. A route with duty prepaid removes that risk.

Can I mix Kyobo books with items from other stores? Not with Kyobo's own shipping. Through HaulKorea you can hold items and ship one box. See also Aladin and YES24.
