Purchasing Agent vs Package Forwarding from Korea: Which One Do You Need? (2026)

By HaulKorea · Last checked 2026-10-04

The answer turns on one question: can you complete checkout on the Korean store yourself? If your account and your card work, package forwarding is enough, because you only need a Korean address. If signup, identity verification or payment stops you, forwarding cannot help and you need a purchasing agent, who buys the item for you. This guide explains both models, how each one charges, what can go wrong, and which fits each type of Korean store.

The difference in one table

You buy, we ship (package forwarding) We buy for you (purchasing agent)
Korean term 배송대행 (baesong daehaeng) 구매대행 (gumae daehaeng)
Who places the order You The agent
Who pays the store You, with your own card The agent, then you pay the agent
What you need A store account, a payment method the store accepts, some Korean A link to the product
What the service provides A Korean address, storage, repacking, international shipping Buying, receiving, checking, international shipping
Who deals with the store if something is wrong You The agent
Typical number of payments Two or more: the store, then the forwarder One or two, depending on the service

A third option sits above both: buying direct. If the store ships to your country itself, start there. We say so in each of our store guides.

How package forwarding works

A forwarding company gives you an address at its warehouse in Korea, usually with a personal suite or member code. You shop on the Korean store as if you lived there and enter that address at checkout. The store delivers domestically. The forwarder receives the parcel, weighs it, and bills you for international shipping.

It works well when the store is happy to sell to you and only the delivery address is the obstacle.

What forwarding cannot do. A forwarder does not log in for you, pass identity checks for you, or pay for you. If the store's signup page asks for a Korean mobile number, or the payment page rejects your card, you are stuck before the forwarder is ever involved.

How a purchasing agent works

You send the agent a product link and your options. The agent buys the item with a Korean account and Korean payment method, receives it, and ships it to you. You pay the agent.

It works when the barrier is at the store's front door: signup, verification, payment, or language.

What a purchasing agent cannot do. An agent cannot buy things that are tied to a named person, such as concert tickets that are checked against the buyer's passport at the venue. An agent also cannot export items that are restricted in air freight or by the destination country. And a store's terms may limit resale or bulk buying. Rules differ by store, so check when it matters.

Why checkout fails on Korean stores

Three walls come up again and again.

1. Identity verification. Many Korean sites ask for 본인인증 (bon-in injeung, identity verification) at signup or before certain purchases. It usually runs through a Korean mobile carrier, so it needs a Korean phone number registered in your name. Not every store does this. YES24's help center, for example, describes an email-verified signup path for overseas residents. Marketplaces and secondhand apps tend to be stricter than bookstores.

2. Payment. Korean checkouts are built around domestic cards, bank transfers and local wallet apps. Some accept foreign Visa and Mastercard; some accept them in theory and fail in practice. A store's global site usually accepts foreign cards and PayPal even when its Korean site does not.

3. Language and options. Most domestic sites are Korean only. Browser translation handles product pages well enough, but option menus, address forms and error messages are where orders go wrong.

If you hit wall 1 or 2, you need a purchasing agent. If you only hit wall 3 and can push through, forwarding still works.

When forwarding is the right choice

  • You already have an account on the store and a card it accepts.
  • You read enough Korean, or are patient with translation, to check options and order status.
  • You are buying during a time-limited sale and want to check out the second it opens.
  • You want to use your own coupons, points or membership tier.
  • You are comfortable handling a wrong item or a cancellation with the store's customer service yourself.

When a purchasing agent is the right choice

  • The store requires Korean identity verification and you cannot pass it.
  • Your card is declined and the store offers no other method you can use.
  • The store has no global site, or its global site does not carry the item.
  • You do not want to open accounts on five different Korean sites.
  • You want someone in Korea to deal with the store if the wrong thing arrives.
  • You want to know the full cost before you commit.

Decision table by store type

Store type Typical barrier Direct possible? Forwarding works? Purchasing agent needed?
Large marketplaces that require Korean identity verification Signup and payment Rarely Only if you already hold a verified account Usually yes
Brand or retailer with a global site Global catalog is smaller; exclusives stay on the Korean site Yes, for what the global site lists Yes, if the Korean site takes your card For Korean-site-only items
Online bookstores Language; per-store shipping rules Often yes. Aladin, YES24 and Kyobo all ship books abroad Yes For used copies, goods and mixed boxes
K-pop album shops Preorder windows, version choices, store benefits Often yes through global stores Yes When the benefit is only on the Korean site
Secondhand apps and person-to-person listings Verified account, in-app chat in Korean, local payment, seller discretion No No, in most cases Yes, and not every agent handles them. Ask first
Small independent shops and brand sites Card acceptance is hit or miss Sometimes If your card works If it does not
Ticketing sites Ticket is tied to your identity Yes, on the site's own global page No No. An agent is the wrong tool

Our store guides go into specifics for Aladin, YES24 and Kyobo.

Consolidation: one box instead of five

Both models can combine parcels. Several orders arrive at the warehouse over days or weeks, and they leave as a single box.

This matters because international shipping has a high cost for the first kilogram and a lower cost for each additional one. Five small parcels cost far more than one medium box. Consolidation also interacts with domestic shipping: YES24, for instance, charges ₩2,500 below ₩15,000 on books and ships free above it, so small separate orders each pay that fee on their way to the warehouse.

The limits of consolidation are worth knowing:

  • Storage time. Warehouses allow a free storage period and may charge after it.
  • Preorders. A box waits for its slowest item. An album that releases in six weeks holds everything else.
  • Customs value. One large box has one large declared value. For the US this no longer changes much, since the $800 duty-free allowance ended on August 29, 2025 and duty is charged on value at any size. In countries that still have a low-value threshold, a combined box can cross it.
  • Volume. Carriers charge by size as well as weight. Bulky, light items such as plush toys or bedding can cost more than expected.

How each model charges, in general terms

We are not quoting anyone's prices here, including our own. This is the structure to look for.

Cost item You buy, we ship (package forwarding) We buy for you (purchasing agent)
Item price Paid to the store by you Paid through the agent
Domestic shipping in Korea Paid to the store by you Passed through in the quote
Service fee Often none for basic forwarding; charged for extras A flat fee per order or a percentage of item value
Exchange rate Your card's rate The agent's rate. Compare it against the market rate
International shipping Billed after the parcel is weighed Estimated up front or billed after weighing, depending on the service
Extras Consolidation, repacking, photos and storage may each be charged Often bundled; check what is included
Import duty and tax Usually yours to pay on arrival Depends on the service and destination

Two things decide whether a quote is honest: whether the exchange rate is disclosed, and whether international shipping is in the first number you see. A low service fee with shipping billed later is hard to compare with anything.

How HaulKorea does it. We are a purchasing agent. You see a total that includes international shipping before paying, and you pay once by PayPal. After the parcel is weighed, any excess shipping is refunded, and there is no second charge. For US addresses, import duty is included in that total. For other countries it is not, and the recipient pays it locally. Details are on the pricing page.

How ordering through HaulKorea works, step by step

  1. Copy the product address from the Korean store. 2.3. Choose options and your country. Size, color, version, quantity.
  2. Check the total, international shipping included.
  3. Pay once with PayPal. No Korean card, phone number or account is needed.
  4. We buy the item and it is delivered to our warehouse in Korea.
  5. You receive inspection photos before anything is shipped abroad. If you are buying in several rounds, items can wait and go in one box.
  6. We ship and send tracking. Delivery time:.

Things that go wrong, and how to avoid them

With forwarding

  • Wrong address format. If you leave out your suite or member code, the warehouse receives a parcel it cannot match to you. Copy the address exactly.
  • The store cancels. Some stores cancel orders they suspect are going to a forwarding address or to a reseller. You get a refund, days later, and the sale price is gone.
  • Returns from a warehouse. The store's return window starts when the parcel reaches the warehouse, not you. Kyobo's change-of-mind return fee is ₩2,500, for example, but you would have to arrange the return in Korean, from abroad, through the forwarder.
  • A surprise at the door. If duty is unpaid, an express carrier bills you and adds its own fee. One logistics provider lists FedEx's US minimum at $17.50 from July 20, 2026.

With a purchasing agent

  • Sold out between quote and purchase. Stock moves. For limited items, give a second choice so the order is not held up.
  • Wrong option. A link does not always carry the option you had selected. State size, color and version in words.
  • Unclear fees. If you cannot tell what the total will be before paying, ask. That is the whole point of using an agent.
  • Items an agent should not promise. Tickets, fresh food, medicine, alcohol and tobacco are either not possible or uncertain. If you are unsure, ask us before you order.

With both

  • Restricted items. Batteries, perfume, aerosols, nail polish and some foods cannot travel by air or cannot enter certain countries.- Sizing. Korean clothing and shoe sizes run differently, and many stores list one "free" size. Read the measurement chart in centimeters.
  • Preorder delays. A release date can slip, and everything packed with it waits.

Returns and customs under each model

Returns. In both models the realistic return window is while the item is still in Korea. With forwarding, you negotiate with the store. With an agent, the agent does, which is why inspection photos before export matter. Once a parcel has crossed a border, return shipping usually costs more than the item. Our rules are on the refund page.

Customs. Every country differs, and in most cases the recipient is the importer and pays. For the US, CBP states that the buyer is the importer and duty depends on what the item is and where it was made. Since July 24, 2026, most Korean-made goods are charged a combined 12.5%, according to EY's summary of the USTR notice, and goods made in China are charged more even when bought in Korea. With forwarding, you typically pay this on arrival. With HaulKorea, US duty is already in the total. The full explanation is in our US import duty guide.

FAQ

What is the difference between a purchasing agent and package forwarding? With forwarding, you buy the item yourself and the service only ships it. With a purchasing agent, the service buys it for you and ships it.

Do I need a Korean phone number to shop from Korean stores? For many marketplaces, yes, because signup uses Korean mobile identity verification. Some stores, including some bookstores, offer an email-based path for overseas residents. A purchasing agent removes the need either way.

Is package forwarding cheaper than a purchasing agent? It can be, since there is often no buying fee. Compare totals, not fees: add consolidation, storage and repacking charges, your card's exchange rate, and any duty billed at delivery.

Can I use forwarding if my foreign card is declined? No. Forwarding starts after you have paid the store. If payment fails, you need an agent or a store with a global site.

Can a purchasing agent buy concert tickets? No. Tickets on Korean ticketing sites are tied to the buyer's identity and checked at the venue. Buy those yourself on the ticketing site's global page.

Can I combine orders from different Korean stores into one package? Yes, with either model. With HaulKorea you can hold items at the warehouse and ship one box.

Who pays import duty? Usually the recipient. HaulKorea includes duty for US shipments only; for other countries the recipient pays on arrival.

So, which one?

If you can check out on the Korean store yourself and do not mind handling problems, use forwarding. If you cannot, or you want one number and one payment, use a purchasing agent. Send us a link and compare for yourself.
