How to Buy from Joonggonara from Overseas (2026 Guide)

By HaulKorea · Last checked 2026-10-05

Joonggonara (중고나라, Junggonara) does not ship overseas and, as far as we could find, has no global version for foreign buyers. Sellers are private individuals who post in Korean and send parcels within Korea. To buy from abroad you need either your own verified Korean account plus a Korean address, or a person in Korea you trust. HaulKorea does not buy from individual sellers on Joonggonara, and we have no route to offer for these listings. This guide still covers how Joonggonara's escrow and fees work in 2026, where buyers get stuck, the risks of secondhand goods, and what you can do instead.

What is Joonggonara and why do shoppers want it?

Joonggonara means "secondhand nation." It began as a community board on Naver Cafe in December 2003 and grew into the largest secondhand community in Korea, with a membership reported at close to 20 million on the cafe side. It later became a company with its own app.

For years it was a bulletin board more than a marketplace. People posted, exchanged phone numbers, and wired money to each other's bank accounts. That openness made it huge, and it also made the name a byword for bank-transfer scams.

The platform has spent the last two years rebuilding around that problem. In mid-2025 it announced a "safe guarantee" project: Safe Pay escrow became the default on every transaction, sellers were pushed to verify their identity, and the platform began compensating fraud losses. From September 2025, items can only be listed through the app, and app listings are mirrored to the Naver Cafe. In a July 28, 2026 app update, it added AI-assisted self-inspection listings, a trust score called 안심거래지수 (ansim georae jisu, safe trade index), and doubled the compensation ceiling from ₩1,000,000 to ₩2,000,000.

Why would someone overseas care? Breadth. Bunjang leans toward fashion and fandom goods. Joonggonara is where Koreans sell everything else: film cameras and lenses, audio gear, synthesizers, bicycle parts, golf clubs, game consoles, discontinued Korean-market electronics, and old collectibles. If an item was sold in Korea ten years ago and is gone from stores, there is a good chance a copy is listed here.

Can you buy from Joonggonara directly from overseas?

In practice, no. There are four places where an overseas buyer gets stuck.

1. The account. The app is tied to Korean identity checks, known as 본인인증 (bon-in injeung, identity verification). Korean phone verification matches your name against a mobile line registered to you with a Korean carrier. An overseas number does not pass. Joonggonara has been raising the share of verified users, and verified accounts carry a badge.

2. The language. Listings, chat, and the app interface are Korean only. There is no built-in English mode. Condition notes use slang and abbreviations that machine translation handles badly.

3. The seller. Even with an account, the seller is a private person who expects to hand the parcel to a Korean courier or convenience store counter. They will not fill out a customs form.

4. The address. You need a Korean delivery address.

Unlike Bunjang, which runs Global Bunjang for overseas buyers, Joonggonara has no equivalent that we could find. If you see a site claiming to be "Joonggonara Global," check carefully who operates it.

How Safe Pay protects a buyer (and what it does not cover)

Safe Pay is an escrow. You pay Joonggonara, not the seller. The money is released only after the purchase is confirmed. If the seller sends nothing, the money comes back.

Three numbers to know, from the company's 2025 and 2026 announcements:

  • 3.5% buyer fee. Added on top of the item price. Deals of ₩20,000 or less are exempt.
  • Three days to confirm. In September 2025 the automatic confirmation period was shortened from five days to three. If the buyer does nothing, the purchase confirms itself and the seller is paid.
  • Up to ₩2,000,000 compensation. For losses on transactions that went through identity verification and Safe Pay, raised from ₩1,000,000 in July 2026.

What escrow does not do: it does not judge whether "lightly used" was an honest description, and it does not authenticate anything. The three-day window is also short. An item has to be opened and checked almost as soon as it arrives.

The routes that exist, and the one that does not

1. Direct from overseas 2. Your own account + forwarding address 3. A person you know in Korea 4. We buy for you (HaulKorea)
Possible? No Only with a verified Korean account Yes, if they are willing No. HaulKorea does not buy Joonggonara listings
Who talks to the seller — You, in Korean Your contact —
Who pays through Safe Pay — You, with a payment method the app accepts Your contact —
Who checks the item within three days — Depends on the forwarder Your contact —
Language needed — Korean None for you —
Works for — Former residents with a live Korean phone line People with friends or family in Korea The same item new, from a Korean store

Your own account plus forwarding makes sense only if you used to live in Korea and still have a phone line and account in your name. You buy, the seller ships to the forwarder's address, and the forwarder exports it. Remember the three-day confirmation clock: if the forwarder does not open the box, nobody checks it before the seller is paid.

A person in Korea is the realistic route for everyone else. A friend or relative with an account buys the item, checks it on arrival, and mails it to you. It works because that person can meet a seller, read the chat, and open the box the day it arrives.

HaulKorea is not a route here. We do not buy from individual sellers on Joonggonara, and there is no listing type on this platform that we handle.

Why HaulKorea does not buy on Joonggonara

Buying on Joonggonara means a person messaging a stranger in Korean, confirming the item is still available, agreeing on shipping, paying, and then inspecting the item within three days. Each of those steps can fail, and none of them can be priced or timed in advance.

  • Every listing is a single item from a private person. There is no product page that stays put while a quote is prepared.
  • Many sellers only deal in person. We do not send staff to meet sellers.
  • Nobody certifies the item. Joonggonara does not authenticate, and a photo from our warehouse would not tell you whether a lens has haze inside or a battery holds a charge.
  • There is no return path. A store order that arrives wrong can be sent back inside Korea. A private sale usually cannot.

HaulKorea's promise is one total, paid once, for an item we can stand behind until it leaves Korea. On this platform we could not keep it, so we do not take the order.

What HaulKorea can do instead

Look for the same item new. Before settling for used, search Korean online stores for the model. Current cameras, headphones, game consoles, outdoor wear, and golf gear are often sold new by Korean retailers with a normal product page. If you find one, paste that address into our quote form. You see one total that includes international shipping, pay once by PayPal, and receive inspection photos before the parcel leaves Korea. Our fees are on the pricing page.

Check whether the same item is on Bunjang. The same item may also be listed on Bunjang, which is a resale platform HaulKorea does buy from. If you find the item there, paste the Bunjang listing address into our quote form. See the Bunjang guide.

For sneakers and streetwear, look at KREAM fast delivery. On KREAM we buy only items available for 빠른배송 (ppareun baesong, fast delivery), which are already inspected and stored in KREAM's warehouse. See the KREAM guide.

For photocards, use Pocamarket's own global service. Pocamarket runs a global app that sells to overseas buyers directly.

If it only exists used on Joonggonara, such as a discontinued lens or an out-of-production synthesizer, we have nothing to offer. A trusted person in Korea is the realistic answer.

What does a Joonggonara purchase cost?

Platform-side costs, as of October 2026:

Item Amount
Item price Set by seller, usually negotiable in Korean chat
Safe Pay buyer fee 3.5% (none at ₩20,000 or less)
Domestic shipping Set by seller; some listings include it
Authentication Not provided by the platform

A quick example of the platform fee alone: on a ₩300,000 camera body, the buyer fee is ₩10,500, so the Safe Pay charge is ₩310,500 before domestic shipping.

Whoever buys for you will also have costs to send the item abroad: packing, international postage, and whatever import charges your country applies. No HaulKorea quote applies to Joonggonara listings.

What do people look for on Joonggonara?

Because every listing is a one-off, we give categories here and not price quotes.

  • Film and digital cameras, lenses. One of the busiest categories. Check for fungus, haze, and shutter counts.
  • Audio gear and instruments. Headphones, DAPs, guitars, synthesizers, effects pedals.
  • Game consoles and Korean-edition games. Region and language matter. Ask.
  • Bicycle and golf equipment. Frames, wheelsets, clubs. Oversized parcels raise international shipping sharply.
  • Discontinued Korean-market electronics. Mind voltage (Korea uses 220V) and batteries.
  • Fashion and outdoor wear. Korean outdoor brands in particular.
  • K-pop and hobby collectibles. Present, though fandom goods are more concentrated on Bunjang and photocards on Pocamarket.

Tickets are heavily traded on Joonggonara. They are outside what HaulKorea handles on any platform.

Things that go wrong on Joonggonara (and how to avoid them)

The seller asks to move off Safe Pay. A message offering a discount for a direct bank transfer, or a link to a "payment page" in chat, is the classic fraud pattern on Korean resale sites. Whoever is buying for you should refuse and end the deal there.

"Meet in person only." Many sellers write 직거래 (jikgeorae, in-person deal) and name a subway station. Those listings cannot be bought remotely.

Sold before anyone answered. Good prices disappear in hours. Koreans call a bargain listing 쿨매 (kulmae, "cool sale"). The gap between your request and the seller's reply is the main reason orders fail.

Condition surprises. "A급" (A-geup, A grade) has no fixed meaning. Photos may be old. For electronics, "works fine" may not include the battery. Give the person buying for you a written list of what must be true: "shutter works, no fungus in the lens, original charger included."

The three-day clock. After delivery, the purchase confirms automatically in three days. Problems need to be raised with the seller inside that window. This is the reason a real inspection on arrival matters more here than at a retailer.

No authentication. Joonggonara does not certify that a luxury item, sneaker, or collectible is genuine. For items where authenticity is the main worry, a platform with built-in inspection, such as KREAM, is a safer choice.

Items that cannot fly. Lithium batteries, power banks, aerosols, perfume, and liquids face airline limits. Large or heavy goods may be shippable but expensive.

Returns, condition disputes, and customs

Korean consumer law gives online shoppers a withdrawal period when they buy from a business. A sale between two private individuals is different: there is no general right to return because you changed your mind. On Joonggonara the practical position is that a deal is final unless the item is materially different from the listing and you raise it before confirmation.

Once a parcel has been exported, the options narrow further. The seller has been paid, return postage is international, and the platform's dispute window has closed. That is why the check has to happen in Korea, inside the three-day window, by a person who can open the box. Ask your contact for photos and, for electronics, a short video of the item working before they send it on.

Customs rules depend on your country, and some countries treat used goods differently from new ones. A parcel mailed to you by a private person is still an import, and any duty or tax is collected from you on arrival. For new items ordered from a Korean store through HaulKorea, US-bound orders have import duty included in the total, and for other destinations the recipient pays. Our refund policy applies to those store orders only.

FAQ

Does Joonggonara ship internationally? No. Sellers are individuals who ship within Korea, and we found no official overseas service as of October 2026.

Is there a Joonggonara app in English? No. The app and listings are in Korean.

Is Joonggonara safe now? Safer than its reputation. All app transactions now go through Safe Pay escrow, and the platform compensates up to ₩2,000,000 on qualifying verified transactions. Escrow does not check condition or authenticity, so the item still has to be inspected.

How much is the Joonggonara buyer fee? 3.5% of the transaction amount through Safe Pay. Transactions of ₩20,000 or less are exempt. Sellers pay 2.5%.

Can HaulKorea buy a Joonggonara listing for me? No. HaulKorea does not buy from individual sellers on Joonggonara. We can buy the same item new from a Korean online store, or sneakers and streetwear from KREAM when your size has fast delivery.

Can I negotiate the price from overseas? Negotiation happens in Korean chat with the seller. Only someone with an account, such as a contact in Korea, can do it.

Can I return a Joonggonara item? Usually not. It is a private sale. A mismatch has to be raised with the seller before the purchase confirms, which happens automatically after three days.

What is the difference between Joonggonara and Bunjang? Both are Korean secondhand platforms with mandatory escrow. Bunjang has an official global site and is stronger in fashion and fandom goods. Joonggonara is broader in electronics and hobby gear and has no global site.

Next step

We cannot buy a Joonggonara listing for you. If the item is still sold new by a Korean online store, send us that product link and we will show you the full total before you pay.
