What is Kakao Friends and why do fans want the Korean shop?

Kakao Friends are the characters from KakaoTalk, the messaging app that almost everyone in Korea uses. They began as emoticons. The original group was Muzi, Con, Apeach, Jay-G, Tube, Frodo, and Neo. Ryan, the lion with no mane, joined in January 2016 and became the face of the brand. Choonsik, the stray cat Ryan adopted, arrived in July 2020 and now leads most new merchandise.

The official shop is where new lines appear first. Kakao releases goods in themed collections, each with its own story and a fixed number of items. In 2026 so far that has included:

• A PUBG: Battlegrounds collaboration on February 4, with 12 items including plush, keyring dolls, LED figures, and keycap keyrings.
• "Choonsusan" on March 6, a 25-item line with Choonsik as a fish-market vendor, including sauce bowls, soju glasses, and chopsticks.
• A traditional Korean theme on July 10, with 13 items such as mother-of-pearl style pieces and a celadon-pattern hand towel.
• A Pompompurin collaboration on August 20, with 13 items including a medium plush, keyring dolls, and rubber gloves.

These are not evergreen products. A collection runs, sells through, and is replaced by the next theme. Resellers abroad carry a small slice of each line, often weeks later and at a markup.

The physical side has also shrunk. The Gangnam flagship closed in January 2025, leaving Hongdae as the main flagship in Seoul. For anyone not traveling to Korea, the online shop is the most complete source.

The platform. The Kakao Friends shop is hosted on Kakao's store platform, the same system behind shopping inside KakaoTalk. Kakao's shopping terms define a member as someone who logs in with a Kakao account.

The account. KakaoTalk itself can be registered with a non-Korean phone number. That does not mean every Kakao service works with such an account. Payment features in particular have their own identity checks under Korean rules, and we could not confirm that an overseas account can complete an order.

Payment. We could not confirm that overseas-issued cards are accepted. Plan as if they are not.

Address. We found no international delivery option. The only delivery method on a product page is domestic parcel delivery, sent two to five business days after payment.

Is there a global store? Kakao has sold abroad in other ways over the years, including a shop in Tokyo that opened in 2018 and listings on overseas marketplaces. We could not confirm an official international online store operating as of October 2026. If you find official listings in your country and they have the item you want, buy there. Just expect a much smaller selection than the Korean shop.

New collections are also sold through KakaoTalk Gift and Korean fashion platforms such as Musinsa and 29CM. Those are Korean domestic channels with the same barriers.

That threshold is easy to reach. Keyring dolls on the shop are priced around ₩14,000 to ₩19,000, so two of them plus a small item gets you there. A collaboration set of sweet-potato keyring dolls has been listed at ₩38,000 on its own.

Kakao also runs gift-with-purchase events around launches. During the Pompompurin release, for example, buyers who spent ₩50,000 or more and included a collaboration item received a box of cookies. Things that go wrong (and how to avoid them)

Launch-day sellouts. Popular pieces from a new collection can sell out within the first days. If you are ordering at launch, send the quote request as early as possible and tell us which items are must-haves.

Wrong character. One design, five characters, five nearly identical URLs. Double-check the name after the underscore before you paste the link.

Random items. With blind keyrings, nobody chooses the design, including us. Buying several does not guarantee a full set. Order them only if you are comfortable with duplicates.

Glass and ceramics. Soju glasses, mugs, and dishes are breakable. Inspection photos confirm they arrived intact at the warehouse, and we pack for export, but fragile goods always carry more risk on a long trip.

Batteries and electronics. LED figures, mood lights, and anything with a built-in battery fall under carrier battery rules. Check our prohibited items list or ask before ordering.

Customs rules differ by country. For the US, the $800 duty-free exemption on small parcels was suspended on August 29, 2025.
